St.Benedictine Abbey
St. Thomas Benedictine Abbey, located in Kappadu, Kerala, stands as a testament to the growth of monastic life within the Syro-Malabar Catholic tradition. Its origins trace back to 1985 when three monks—Fr. Bede Maniyankary, Fr. Anselm Maniyakkupara, and Fr. John Kurichianil—from Asirvanam Benedictine Monastery in Bangalore were authorized by Rt. Rev. Ambroise Watelet, then Abbot President of the Benedictine Congregation of the Annunciation, to explore the establishment of a monastic community in Kerala.
In 1986, the trio settled in Changanacherry, residing in a house generously provided by a local Catholic family. This period allowed them to immerse themselves in the local culture and discern a suitable location for their envisioned monastery.
The initial years were marked by humble beginnings, with the community residing in existing structures and temporary facilities serving as chapel, study hall, refectory, and dormitory. Over time, the monastery expanded its infrastructure, constructing dedicated buildings for various monastic functions.
St. Thomas Benedictine Abbey belongs to the Syro-Malabar rite and continues the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, and service to the local church and society. The community has grown significantly since its humble beginnings and now consists of priests and young men in various stages of formation. The Abbey also welcomes Benedictine Volunteers who live and share the community's life, often assisting with teaching English to the monks.
